Attention Spring Plant Sale shoppers- your seedlings are growing!

Attention Spring Plant Sale shoppers- your seedlings are growing!

Attention all Spring Plant Sale shoppers! Your seedlings are growing bigger by the day and will be super happy to go home with you on Saturday, May 7th!

The grower we’ve selected for this year is Progressive Plants, and they’re located right here in the valley out in Copperton. It doesn’t get any more local than that! I’ve been out to visit them a few times so far this season to deliver the seeds (boxes and boxes of seeds!) for all of the tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, cucumbers, summer and winter squash, okra, tomatillos and melons that will be available at this year’s Spring Plant Sale, which will be held at Rowland Hall on Saturday, May 7th. (Truth be told, the plants will all be at Rowland Hall the day before for the special pre-sale that takes place Friday evening. You can gain entry to the pre-sale by volunteering at the Plant Sale or making a donation of $250 or more to Wasatch Community Gardens. That way, you’re among the first to be able to choose your plants!)

Last week, the grower told me that the seeds had germinated in their cell trays, so Ashley and I went over to Copperton to visit the baby seedlings. When we arrived at the greenhouse, we were greeted by Gareth, an experienced greenhouse grower, who is overseeing the whole operation to grow these veggie starts for you. Gareth is putting so much effort and attention into getting these transplants ready for your gardens! For consistency and quality control, Gareth has selected a limited staff to be involved in growing the seedlings, one of whom is pictured here.

Her name is Amanda, and she was joyfully potting up some baby tomato plants into the 2” pots that they will live in until they meet you on May 7th.

Isis Candy 3.24.16 for plant sale
Isis Candy tomato seedlings, getting big and strong so they can supply you with
mouthwateringly-delicious cherry tomatoes all summer!

I’m thrilled to report to you that the seedlings are coming along beautifully, as you can see in the photos.  They are a luscious, rich green color and appear to be incredibly healthy and strong. They should be in beautiful shape for the plant sale and for going home with you to produce yummy food all summer!

The next time you see these transplants, they’ll all be lined up A to Z on tables at Rowland Hall, waiting to be chosen and put into your boxes, wheelbarrows, or garden carts! I can’t wait for summer growing to get underway, and I look forward to seeing all of you at the plant sale this year!

Here’s a little of what you can look forward to from the seedlings that will be available at our spring plant sale. Pictured here are some tomatoes that I grew from plants that I purchased at the 2015 WCG Spring Plant Sale: Black Krim, Carbon, Black Cherry, Amish Paste, and Mexico Midget – all of which are WCG customer favorites and making a repeat appearance at the 2016 Spring Plant Sale. We will also have some super cool new varieties for you this year, so stay tuned to the website for the list of veggies we’ll have available!

Happy Growing!
