What is Sharing Backyards?

Sharing Backyards defined:

Sharing Backyards is when two or more people or parties share resources in order to grow or share food. Those parties could be friends, family, neighbors or people who meet for the sole purpose of Sharing Backyards. The resources could be physical such as land, water, tools, and produce, and/or less tangible such as time, effort, and creativity. Of course, Sharing Backyards is much more than simple resource sharing, it is a way for people to garden, connect with others and therefore enrich and empower communities. Yard sharing is a way for those, who might not otherwise, grow and/or access fresh, healthy, local food and interact with others in their community.

Why Urban Village Cooperative and Wasatch Community Gardens started a Sharing Backyards project

The mission of Wasatch Community Gardens is to empower people of all ages and incomes to grow and eat healthy, organic, local food. We work towards this mission primarily through our community gardens, youth gardening, and community education programs. Over the years, interest in community gardens has increased creating longer waiting lists of people anxious to garden. Starting the Sharing Backyards program became another way for us to create opportunities for urban people to grow food, connect with their neighbors, and strengthen our community.

Urban Village Cooperative is a wonderfully diverse community of individuals, families, organization and businesses dedicated to an accelerated shift to a peaceful, sustainable, healthy and prosperous world. (but first we will start right here at home).
Through our self-organizing Community of Practice groups we organize and host educational, re-skilling, and community building experiences that:

  • Foster sustainability, unity and cooperative living
  • Enable our members to create the life they envision and live more sustainable lives
  • Create opportunity for collaborative action between individuals, organization, businesses, government and churches.
