Is Food Diversity and Illusion?
The average supermarket contains almost 40,000 unique items, but how much diversity is really offered when it comes to our food choices? This presentation uses visualization to explore (1) apparently competing brands that are owned by the same parent company, (2) products owned by different firms but produced in the very same facility, (3) the small number of ingredients that make up most processed foods, and (4) the even smaller number of plant and animal varieties that go into our diets. It will also cover steps we can take to support real food diversity.
