Program Description

Wasatch Community Gardens (WCG) partners with Salt Lake City to develop and coordinate sustainable, flourishing community gardens on City-owned land through the Green City Growers Program. Gardens are initiated by and implemented with the surrounding community, Salt Lake City and Wasatch Community Gardens. This program builds on WCG’s 20-plus years of experience working collaboratively with local leaders and volunteers to create and sustain thriving community gardens.

Job Description

Working under the direction of the Community Gardens Program Director, the Green City Growers Coordinator will oversee administration and volunteer leadership development of community gardens on City land. In addition, the garden coordinator will work with community members, Salt Lake City employees, businesses, and local leaders to start new community gardens on City land, up to two per year. The garden coordinator will be responsible for the following:

Program Administration

  • Oversee garden finances, including tracking garden funds, processing reimbursement requests, and overseeing garden grants
  • Maintain database records for each garden; update gardener records
  • Maintain garden waitlists, process garden plot applications, manage gardener renewals, and provide exit surveys for departing gardeners;

Community Organizing

  • Train and support garden leadership teams in garden organizing and ongoing garden management
  • Interact with diverse community members in individual and group contexts
  • Facilitate garden meetings
  • Constructively address conflict in gardens and provide mediation among gardeners, as needed
  • Coordinate with New Roots of Utah and other community partners to enhance participation of underserved communities in existing gardens

Project Management

  • Promote and publicize Green City Growers program in target communities to grow participation
  • Work collaboratively with Salt Lake City to review and select up to two new community garden sites for the Green City Growers program per year
  • Facilitate the planning and implementation of the selected new community garden projects with community garden group organizers; includes hosting open houses; mission crafting, specifying garden rules; site design and site prep
  • Oversee infrastructure installation and maintenance at the gardens
  • Ensure that community gardens meet Wasatch Community Gardens policies and standards

Other Responsibilities

  • Report to WCG’s Community Gardens Program Director and Salt Lake City’s Sustainability Program Manager
  • Participate in Community Garden Program trainings
  • Participate in WCG events and general staff responsibilities
  • Take on other program-related duties as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Great attitude, sense of humor, and enthusiasm about working with diverse communities
  • Organized, motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a group
  • Community organizing skills and experience
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Project Management skills and experience
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Facilitation skills, with the ability to help individuals and the group overcome challenges
  • Ability to clearly convey expectations and listen actively to concerns
  • Ability to handle conflict professionally and navigate contentious situations
  • Strong commitment to community empowerment, social justice, and community food security
  • Ability to work with and maneuver in large bureaucratic systems
  • Basic computer skills including MS Office, Gmail, online calendar, and Apple operating systems
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
  • Ability to travel throughout Salt Lake City to meet with diverse groups and individuals and attend community meetings and events

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Mediation skills
  • Knowledge of organic/sustainable gardening methods and/or a desire to learn more
  • At least 3 years experience working in the community non-profit or advocacy world
  • Familiarity with local resources (gardening, community, etc)
  • Experience starting or coordinating a community garden

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Utah driver's license and insurance; and a reliable method of transportation


40 hours/week, flexible schedule, some evenings and Saturdays.

Salary and benefits

$30,000-34,000 per year plus health insurance and generous vacation package. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
