Seed Cards

How to make Seed Cards

What are seed cards?

They are hand-made paper cards made from recycled paper sprinkled with wildflower seeds. The idea is that kids can make these individually by hand, learn about how recycling paper works, and then give their beautiful seed as gifts that can be planted in the ground.

How do we plant it?

Plant a few inches under nutrient rich soil (soil with compost) in a sunny spot. Water it regularly as seeds instruct. The paper will decompose in the soil and the seeds will grow beautiful wildflowers.

What materials do we need?

-Cookie Cutters, one for each kid (different shapes)
-Newspaper (for tearing, and also 1/2 pages folded in half to put each card on after they are done to dry)
-Shreds of colored paper (already been printed on one side)
-Wildflower seeds that grow in your climate (note sunny or shady and which zone) Utah is zone 5-7.
-10-12” screens , one for each kid (round with handles from dollar store or you can make square screens by stapling screen material on small picture frames.)
-water
-bin or container to pre-soak paper and water in beforehand (put just enough water to cover newspapers)
-cups, one for each kid to mix pulp in
-felt pieces, one for each kid. (these are used to put the card on to soak up excess water).
-*blender as an alternate for cups ( you can do blender batches and have kids take turns blending, but there’s not as much hands-on activity with the kids. If you have a bicycle blender, that’s a really fun activity that is active. The blender gets the paper into a much finer pulp if you really want thinner paper cards).
-*1/2” heavy board or thick book (not necessary, but useful to make thinner cards. After step 9, put another piece of felt on top of card then press board/book on top to flatten a little.)

Who can make them?

Anyone! Good for ages 4 and up.
