Starting A Community Garden

Want to start your own community garden? We can help! Please start by reading our extensive guide, From Neglected Parcels to Community Gardens (PDF).

Consulting for New Community Garden Projects

Once you are ready to create a new garden, we can act as a consultant. It is part of our mission to help community members that are willing to commit themselves to the task of community garden creation! We also help other existing community gardens in Utah.

Whether you are a private landowner with a vacant lot, a teacher who'd like to start an outdoor classroom, a developer thinking of incorporating a garden into your plan, or a neighborhood group who'd like to garden together, we have resources available to help you achieve a functional, productive garden. It doesn't take money, but it takes commitment from you and your neighbors.

We can help you every step of the way. If you want to start a neighborhood community or youth garden, start by reading our online guide, From Neglected Parcels to Community Gardens: A Handbook (pdf). Then, contact Brit Merrill for help with project-specific questions at 801-359-2658 x11.

From garden layout to assessing community resources, we can offer sound, constructive advice. Aside from our online guide and staff assistance with questions, we also offer the following services:

  • Access to national community gardening resources

  • Information on sustainable gardening practices

  • Site visits to assess a proposed garden site (light, soil, water access, layout, composting space, etc).

  • Resources for ideas in creating the garden

  • Workshops on community and school gardening

As you go through the process of creating a new garden, we can also provide:

  • First meeting facilitation and attendance

  • Consulting presence at subsequent planning meetings (as needed)

  • Seeds (as available)

  • Access to tools, such as a tiller through our Tool Lending Library

  • Local business resource listings
