Outreach Intern (Parks for Produce Gardens)
Internship Description
Wasatch Community Gardens is looking for an individual to help us do outreach in communities that are recruiting to fill their community garden. The Outreach Intern will work closely with the Salt Lake County Garden Coordinator to help identify target communities and develop an outreach strategy within those communities. This will include working with the public, flyering, press releases, participating in organizing meetings, and doing stories for our monthly e-newsletter. Some database work (such as updating volunteer hours and participant information) may also be required.
The ideal applicant has a passion for promoting organic, urban gardening, and local food systems; is detail-oriented and excellent at meeting deadlines; works well independently; and has some experience with online publishing. This is a great opportunity to work with a respected community-based nonprofit, and gain extensive professional experience and valuable resume-building skills.
Organizational Background
Wasatch Community Gardens is a community-based nonprofit that has served the Salt Lake County community for 20 years. Since our founding in 1989, we have provided opportunities for individuals to grow their own food in urban gardens. We also provide educational opportunities to youth and adults. Our mission is to empower people of all ages and incomes to grow and eat healthy, organic, local food.
The Wasatch Community Gardens and Salt Lake County’s Urban Farming Initiative have partnered to develop new community gardens on County park properties. Under the banner of “Parks for Produce,” communities that seek to start a community garden complete an application process with the County, which then selects from among the applicants based on the strength of community interest. The County provides the land, water, and basic infrastructure. Wasatch Community Gardens provides community organizing, educational opportunities, and administrative assistance.
