2022 In-Person Class: Vermicomposting with Red Wigglers

Description

Would you like to make your own compost but don't have the outdoor space? Are you tired of not putting your kitchen scraps to good use?  Do you already compost but want to do more to create fertile garden soil?  If so, come join us in our Teaching Gardens to learn how to make compost indoors year-round using red wiggler worms.  After going over some basics, we'll meet some "red wigglers" up close.  We'll practice sorting worms from their castings, so plan to get dirty during this part of the workshop!

We'll also practice making some fresh bedding for our red wigglers.  Students will get to examine several different kinds of worm bins and will receive a take-home list of resources, including a parts list for the DIY bin that we will show in class.

Please come dressed for being outside and for sorting worms (a messy business!).  Garden gloves are NOT recommended for this very delicate process.  Students not wanting to sort the worms with their bare hands or touch the castings are absolutely welcome to simply observe.   Please do come to class prepared with sunscreen, a water bottle, a sun hat, etc., and don't forget your mask :-)

This workshop has a limited number of spots available.  No walk-ins permitted the day of class, so please register online ahead of time.  Class will be held rain or shine.  In case of rain, we will hold class on our covered patio.

Instructors:  Marybeth Janerich and Katie Sue Mulliken

This workshop is $25.

Discounted rates available to community gardeners with WCG or the WCG Network.

Pre-Registration is required.

No refunds will be issued for cancellations received within 24 hours of class unless we can fill your spot.

NOTE: We offer a limited number of reduced-tuition scholarships for low-income individuals.  If you would like to apply, please fill out and submit our scholarship application before continuing the on-line registration process.
