NEW! 2025 Biochar - Making Your Own Black Earth

Date
Oct 11, 2025 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Location
City Farm, 743 West 1300 South, Salt Lake City

Description

Join us for a hands-on introduction to biochar—a charcoal-like soil amendment that has been used for millennia. We’ll explore its history, physical properties, and environmental benefits, followed by a live demonstration of biochar production using common dried garden organic materials in a non-commercial TLUD (Top-Lit Up-Draft) burner. This demonstration will depend on suitable air quality conditions. As a contingency, an alternative demo may be made available at a later date and alternative venue.

About our instructor:

Evan Sugden, PhD, is a professional entomologist (yes, bugs) with a diverse and far-ranging career track. His interest in biochar began about 2006 in Seattle as an element of a long-standing commitment to environmentalism and food issues. He has been a professional beekeeper, compost maker and gardener for nearly 50 years.
