Request Support for Your Group
In addition to our existing offerings, Wasatch Community Gardens may provide customized garden and food related support to groups and organizations, upon request. We will consider all requests for support, but due to limited availability, we generally prioritize requests which:
- Represent long-term partnerships with mutual benefits
- Serve people from historically marginalized demographics
- Have high participation rates and low costs of WCG staff time and materials
- WCG is uniquely qualified to offer
In cases where the requested support involves a community or workplace garden on your property, we also prioritize those projects that are sustainable in the long term.
We are thrilled to announce a new, second farm site to be managed by Wasatch Community Gardens (WCG)! This news comes on the heels of our February announcement of our new permanent Glendale Farm Hub in Salt Lake City’s Glendale neighborhood. With TWO new farm sites coming under WCG management this year, we are twice as excited (and then some!) to get to the important work of pursuing healthy food access for all through farm-based programming and local food production as we work to preserve productive green space in our community.
About the New Site
WCG has secured an up-to-25-year agreement with Salt Lake City to manage a tract of land that incorporates a former community garden, Cannon Greens — plus additional space — totaling one acre. Our Cannon Greens Community Garden was closed in 2019 due to urban contamination, and we have worked with the City to remediate and bring the site back to life by transferring the soil we so carefully built (which we lovingly refer to as our "gold") from our current Green Phoenix Farm to this new site. This second farm, also in Salt Lake City's Glendale neighborhood, is located at 743 West 1300 South, just east of the Sorenson Unity Center.
We are eager to utilize this new site as the interim location for our farm-based Job Training Program for women facing homelessness — the Green Team — as these extraordinary women continue to grow produce for distribution through social service partners to those with limited or no access to fresh, healthy, organic, local food. After one to two years at this site, we will expand our Job Training Program to our recently secured Glendale Permanent Farm Hub, which will be under construction during the interim.
A Farm Built to Move
Our current Green Phoenix Farm was built on a lease-based site, meaning it was constructed from the very beginning as a mobile farm. While it might appear that we are in a game of farm musical chairs, this mobile approach to establishing the Green Phoenix Farm in 2016 prepared us for the future of WCG’s urban farm-based programming. While we do not have the same need for mobile farm infrastructure at our permanent Glendale Farm Hub, our existing mobile infrastructure at the Green Phoenix Farm still has a role to play in our plan and community! The mobile infrastructure and equipment we already own will be used to construct the farm at today’s newly announced site. This is exciting for many reasons, including the reality that mobile farm infrastructure is a necessary consideration for many new farmers, given the low availability of affordable farm land to own.
One of our guiding organizational pillars is creating sharable models, and a nonpermanent city farm site is an opportunity to continue demonstrating a mobile farm by relocating our Green Phoenix Farm infrastructure to our new site. We'll be doing the heavy lifting of moving our current farm infrastructure to the new site – with plenty of volunteer and City help – from June through October! Stay tuned to our FRESH newsletter and social media channels (Instagram and Facebook) for updates about the move and opportunities to volunteer and visit the new farm.
Community Night is Wednesday May 8th from 6:30-7:30PM at Wasatch Community Gardens’ Green Phoenix Farm (622 W 100 S, SLC), and serves as an evening to celebrate the growing season with our community and create a less crowded environment to shop for your food producing plants this season, specifically for community members in low-income households (columns A & B in the chart below, or utilizing SNAP Benefits). SNAP is available to purchase plants. If you cannot use SNAP, plants will be priced ½ off. Most of our standard vegetable varieties will be available from $1.50 - $3.00 each.
- Please note we will only have food producing plants at this sale. Other varieties - like flowers, herbs, and ornamental plants - will be available at our public sale on Saturday, May 11th, at Rowland Hall from 8AM-1PM at full price. SNAP is also accepted at our May 11th Spring Plant Sale.
- Please note Community Night is by invitation only and families/individuals must qualify to participate. To qualify you need to meet Income Level A or B in the chart below, or utilize SNAP Benefits. When you register, please note the number of people attending with you, and limit guests to the immediate members of your household, only. We want to ensure we have an accurate guest list and headcount.

Trial Blazers
Wasatch Community Gardens annually evaluates new vegetable varieties to select the best of the best for our Spring Plant Sale, and to try out different crops for suitability in our increasingly hot climate. We offer this community science opportunity to our community gardeners, Pals of the Plant Sale, WCG staff, previous Trial Blazer participants and the general public. We provide free seeds and starts of these trial varieties to grow in their own gardens, while they monitor and report on plant health, productivity, and taste. All Trial Blazer participants are also invited to our celebratory tasting party at the end of the season! Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Tips for Happy Shopping
Herbs, annual flowers, sun and shade perennials, native plants, grasses, and berries and other edible perennials will also be available at the sale. Make our event your one-stop shop for your garden ambitions, and plan your shopping route with our event map.
The entry line in the early hours of the sale can appear long. Don't pass us by! Once the sale opens, the line moves quickly. Consider attending the sale during the later hours to avoid the crowd all together. We'll be serving up plants until 1 pm.
Experienced gardeners - volunteers and staff alike - will be onsite to answer your questions during your shopping experience. These garden enthusiasts are excited to answer your questions about companion planting, pests and diseases, perennials, annuals, and more!
Are your plant dreams bigger than your carrying capacity? Take advantage of our free Veggie Valet service. Our Veggie Valet volunteers will shuttle your large plant orders to a vehicle pick-up area, allowing you to bring your plant babies home with ease.
And by wagon, we mean any means of carrying your plant selections. We will provide free boxes to help shoppers carry their plants. That said, we welcome wagons, baskets, carts, strollers - whatever gets the job done!
An expanded selection of seeds and potatoes can be found at the Plant Sale! Browse multiple varieties of Snake River Seed Cooperative seeds - including WCG-stewarded varieties that were grown at our very own City Farm located at 743 W 1300 S in Glendale. All of these seeds are regionally adapted to the Intermountain West. We'll also have local Idaho potatoes on hand.
It’s easy to be (delightfully) overwhelmed by the many, many tomato varieties available at our sale. Our tomato section will be organized by category - cherries and grapes; paste, sauce and salsa; saladettes and small slicers; and medium and large slicers. Volunteers will be available at the tomato tables to help you select the tomatoes that best fit your tastes!
As you walk the sale, you'll notice that many of our plant variety signs display "tags" that speak to unique aspects of the plants. Watch for staff picks, WCG-stewarded varieties, new varieties, kids picks, container varieties and Slow Food Ark of Taste!
1.5 cubic feet bagged compost from Wild Valley Farms will be available at the sale. Snag a compost ticket at the Merch Table to purchase your compost along with the rest of your plants, and our team will load them into your vehicle for you!
Make sure to visit the merch table to upgrade your garden style with our 2025 WCG t-shirts! We'll also have totes, hats, bandanas, hoodies and more available for you to show your WCG pride. These purchases play an important role in supporting WCG programming.
When You Bring Your Plants Home
Hardening off is a process of getting seedlings used to living outdoors in sun and wind. This process is very important for seedlings grown under grow lights in order to "toughen them up." Our Director of Agricultural Operations, James Loomis, recommends modifying this process for our WCG seedlings, because they have been grown in a bright greenhouse using the sun's light rather than artificial grow lights. They are stout and strong and closer to being ready to plant than plants grown under artificial lights. Here is the process we recommend for acclimating your seedlings to your garden. Click here to view a video about how to care for your seedlings before planting.
Learn how to care for your plant babies once you bring them home! Visit our Resources page on our website for video tutorials featuring Spring Plant Sale-relevant topics such as onion planting, potato planting, tomato trenching and seedling care.
We're offering workshops all season long to help you grow your healthiest, most productive plants yet. From tomato caging to composting to pest management, our workshops run the gamut of veggie gardening interests and abilities. Register for an upcoming workshop today.
Become a Pal of the Plant Sale (PoPS)
Our Spring Plant Sale is one of our longest standing signature events that brings our community together for access to locally grown plants and to support our mission to empower people to grow and eat healthy, organic, local food. The 2025 Spring Plant Sale is on Saturday, May 10, and we offer early access to shopping the sale the night before. Our most enthusiastic shoppers at WCG's Spring Plant Sale - those who spent $150 or more at the previous year's Spring Plant Sale - and donors who make a one-time gift of $150 or more or a "perennial" monthly gift of $10 or more, are our Pals of the Plant Sale, or PoPS! If you do not already fall into this category we invite you to join PoPS by making a donation today.
