2022: In-Person Class (Sat) - Let's Sow Fall Crops

In this in-person, hands-on workshop in WCG's teaching gardens, students will practice sowing seeds for fall crops and receive free veggie seeds to take home. 

CLASS DESCRIPTION:  It's still July, and some of your prized heirloom tomatoes may not have even set fruit yet.  So why on earth are we going to be talking about fall crops?  Well, now's the time to get busy prepping your garden beds and organizing your seeds for all those amazing cool season crops if you want to be harvesting fresh, healthy veggies in October, November, December and beyond! 

Come join us in our new teaching gardens at the Wasatch Community Gardens' Campus to discuss the "when, where and how" of planting quick-maturing and cold-tolerant varieties of all your favorite greens and other cool season veggies.  We'll take soil temperatures in shaded beds vs. sunny beds to better understand summer germination of cool season crops, and we'll practice calculating "days to maturity" using fun and rare varieties of fall vegetable seeds.  Students will also compare regular seeds to pelleted seed. Each student will plant seeds that will grow in the teaching gardens and produce food throughout the fall and winter months.  As a bonus, each student will receive a selection of fall veggie seeds to take home and sow.  

Please come dressed for being outside and for working in the garden, and feel free to bring garden gloves if you have a favorite pair.  Please come prepared with sunscreen, water bottle, and don't forget your mask :-)

We also offer education about sowing fall crops in a webinar on July 20th, so if you're not sure which of the two fall crops classes to take, here are some things to consider:

• The content of the August 6th hands-on workshop overlaps about 75% with the content in our companion "Get Ready to Sow Fall Crops" webinar being offered on Wednesday, July 20th. 
• The webinar on July 20th includes content on season extension (cold frames, low tunnels, etc.), whereas this hands-on planting class does not.  
• This hands-on class allows you to engage with the seeds and soil in the teaching gardens and get instructor feedback on your sowing techniques, whereas the webinar is virtual and includes no hands-on experiential learning.
• The hands-on class lets students spend time in our beautiful and educational teaching gardens, where you can take a self-guided tour before or after class, drink from our artesian well, and engage with our knowledgeable instructors.
• You can participate in the always-popular webinar from the comfort of your home, or you can come to the garden and spend a few hours outside on a Saturday morning in August.  Or, if your garden budget allows for taking two classes related to fall crops, it would be great to take both.  That way, the concepts will be explained in depth in the webinar on July 20th, and then you will get to practice in the soil under the guidance of our instructors on August 6th.  

This hands-on workshop has a limited number of spots available and is expected to sell out.  No walk-ins are permitted the day of class, so please register on line ahead of time.
